Procion Dyeing Procedure
(for Cotton, Linen & Rayon)
General Directions
Use 1 TBL dye powder for 1 lb. of fiber, yarn or fabric (approx. 3 to 6 sq. yds. or 3 T-shirts). It's important that the dyebath completely cover the fabric. For even, smooth color, the fiber, yarn or fabric should be able to move freely in the dyebath. However, too much water will dilute the dye and result in lighter color.
1. Be sure to wash fabric, yarn or fiber to remove any dirt, grease or sizing. We suggest using a liquid detergent or Synthrapol.
2. Fill container (such as a 5 gallon plastic bucket) with 3 gallons of hot (105') tap water, add salt (colors use from 1/2 to 3 cups of non-iodized table salt and 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of Soda Ash depending on the color being used) and dye. When salt and dye are completely dissolved, add wet fiber, yarn or fabric. Rotate constantly at first so the fiber, yarn or fabric is thoroughly exposed to the dye, then at least every 5 minutes throughout the remaining dye period. Rotating the fiber ensures even dye take-up. This period is about 20 minutes.
3. In a separate container, dissolve the soda ash in one quart of hot tap water. When completely dissolved, add to the dyebath in 3 parts at 5 minute intervals while stirring. Do not pour directly on fiber. Continue stirring every 5 minutes for the next 50 minutes, 30 minutes for pastels.
4. Remove from dyebath. Rinse thoroughly in cold water. Then wash in 3 gallons of hot tap water & 1-1/2 tsp liquid detergent or Synthrapol. Rinse until hot water is clear. Spin fiber in washing machine to remove excess water & dry.
Safety
MX dyes are considered nontoxic when used properly. Common sense should be used when handling any dye or chemical. Always wear a dust mask when measuring dye powder. Measure over damp newspaper that can be rolled up and disposed. Use rubber gloves while dyeing and keep dyes out of eyes and mouth. Wash spills up quickly; dyes can quickly be absorbed by surfaces and may be permanent. Cover all work areas with plastic to protect them. Keep dyepot away from children & pets. Keep dyes in closed containers and in a cool dry place, they will keep for several years. Never use cooking pans or utensils for dyeing.
